The light in Venice is something truly special and unique. Due to its location in the Venetian Lagoon, the city is surrounded by water, which creates a beautiful and distinct light that is unlike anywhere else in the world. The light in Venice is soft and diffused, and it reflects off the water, casting a beautiful glow on the city's historic buildings, bridges, and canals. This creates a stunning and romantic atmosphere, especially during sunrise and sunset when the light is at its most magical. Murano is a small island located in the Venetian Lagoon and is known for its glassmaking industry. Wander around the many family run glass marking factories called "fornaci" aka "furnaces" These furnaces are where the skilled glassmakers, "maestri vetrai," create their beautiful glass works, which range from delicate figurines to intricate chandeliers. Murano's glass-making tradition dates back to the 13th century. The island has several glass-making factories, some of which have been passed down through generations of families. Some of hese factories allow you to witness the glass-making process firsthand. The intricate colours and shapes are so tactile and almost make you feel like you're in a sweet shop! You'll struggle not to want to buy some hand made glass so make sure you pack your light weight Skargard bag for the journey.
Burano is another small island also located in the Venetian Lagoon, famous for its brightly coloured houses and lace-making tradition. The brightly coloured houses seemingly floating in the lagoon are like a mixture between a box of coloured pencils and a sweet shop. So deliciously looking it makes you want to buy one or eat one. Which brings us onto our favourite restaurant the Trattoria al Gattto Nero which also has it's home on Burano.
The best and cheapest way to travel around Venice is by taking the vaporetto, which is the city's public water bus. The vaporetto network covers most parts of Venice, including the main islands and many smaller ones. The boats are frequent, and tickets can be bought at the various ticket booths located around the city or directly on board. Venice is a City where you'll very quickly get your 10,000 steps a day so make sure you pack your favourite travel bag and some comfortable shoes!
